Mother’s New Computer … and a Picture for June 13, 2010

Mother's New Computer
Mother's New Computer

My favorite brother Perry and I went in on a bid to buy some used computers from the community college in Rock Springs a few years ago. One of those computers we set up for Mother to use. It’s given her some pretty good service but lately has had a number of problems. Most of these problems are associated with power outages. Even though there’s a battery backup, it doesn’t take a very long outage before the battery is drained and the computer crashes. That happened again last week and the computer would not restart.

After some discussion, we decided to get a new laptop computer. I bought it at Costco where we had a 90 day return, no questions asked, and a two year warranty. The HP laptop has a nice, large screen and a full keyboard, including a number pad.

We took it over on Sunday evening after our Church meetings and I set it up for her. She’s very happy with the new computer and currently has it on the island in the kitchen. On our next trip over I’ll take out the old computer and move her back to her desk as I think she likes that setup better.

She’s very happy, at 86 years of age, to be connected again!

Happy 46th Wedding Anniversary … and a Picture for June 12, 2010

Checking Out the Menu
Checking Out the Menu

We actually had two sunny days in a row. That meant it was time to get the garden beds ready. So, our Saturday started with a trip to the Farmers Market in downtown Pocatello. That was an interesting surprise. Last year I spent several Saturdays (very cold Saturdays) at the Farmers Market trying to sell some raised garden beds (not very successfully).

The market that year was quite large and divided into two sections, one being the actual farmers market and the other being the flea market (my activity was in the flea market). It seemed to be well attended and quite active.

This year, however, the flea market is gone and the Farmers Market was incredibly small. I’ve no idea what happened, but there is not much reason this year to go down there. Somebody did something wrong, as a new market sponsored by the City of Chubbuck opened this year on Tuesday evenings out at the mall parking lot.

The reason for going to the market was to buy some tomato plants. That was successful. Then we went to Lowes and bought several bags of gardening soil to top off some existing garden beds and to fill up some new ones. Nina picked up several plants there as well. Then it was home to get the bags of dirt to the right place so Nina could get ready to start planting. The garden is going in late this year, but it’s been so cold and wet that we just had to wait until the weather turned nicer.

We capped off the day by going out to dinner. It’s been a good 46 years and the 47th year is now underway.

Nina wrote a nice blog entry about our 46 year journey that is far from being finished. I’d do it over again! Thanks sweetheart for a great life!

Mulch, Dirt, and Gardens … and a Picture for June 11, 2010

Stocking Up On Mulch
Stocking Up On Mulch

We had our usual morning at the Idaho Falls Temple and finished our shift about noon. The nice thing about this time of the year is that we actually have some daylight when we arrive at the Temple. It doesn’t last very many weeks, though, as the Summer Equinox is almost upon us.

Nina has decided to do some “lasagna gardening” this year. So we spent the afternoon gathering some of the material she needs for this new activity. The weather was nice and we were both pretty tired by the end of the day. Fridays are very often very long days after getting up at about 3:45 am and going to bed around 10:30 pm that evening.

Not Much Happening … and a Picture for June 10, 2010

Dramatic Skies
Dramatic Skies

I finished up all of the assigned work from my client this afternoon, so for the next while I’ll not have any “work” to do, at least not that I’ll be paid for.

The Pocatello Amateur Radio Club has its monthly meeting on the 2nd Thursday of each month. The meetings usually last for an hour or so plus time to socialize before and after. This month’s meeting had to do with antennas. Specifically, antennas to be used in the Field Day activities on June 26-27.

Field Day is when all of the amateur radio clubs move out of their comfortable radio shacks in their comfortable homes and spend 24 hours operating somewhere out in the field. In our case, we’ll be setting up radio operations at OK Ward Park in Pocatello. The radios will be powered by batteries. The antennas will be put up specifically for this event. The purpose is to exercise our skills at operating without power from the power company and in a place where we would not normally be. I’m looking forward to the activity and hope to learn some things.

Well, It Doesn’t Look New Anymore! …. and a Picture for June 9, 2010

A Stuck Tractor
A Stuck Tractor

The new lawn tractor doesn’t look so new anymore! It got a couple of pretty big owies when I tried to maneuver it past the motor home and didn’t succeed.

The occasion was getting the garden beds ready to be planted. Nina had been working on them during most of the day and there was some stuff that needed to be hauled from the back yard to the trash cans. Since the tractor has a nice trailer with it, I thought I’d haul all of the stuff in one load…. Most of it’s still in the back yard waiting to get into the trash.

I had another meeting out at the airport today. This one is in preparation for the first annual Airport Appreciation Day event that’ll be held at the Pocatello Airport on June 26th. That should be a very good event based on what’s being planned. The best part (in my humble opinion) will be $10 airplane rides … about 20 minutes from engine start to engine stop … and $25 helicopter rides … about 15 minutes from start to stop. I’m hoping to snag a ride in a helicopter. Hope I fit!

Airport Commission … and a Picture for June 8, 2010

The Burn, Baby Burn Plane
The Burn, Baby Burn Plane

Today’s calendar was definitely not empty! I had a Veterans Admin weight management class, an Airport Commission meeting, a meeting with my client, and the weekly Rotary Club meeting. No programming got done on this day.

The Airport Commission is an interesting appointment. The nominal term is for one year, but reappointment is almost automatic if desired (and I desire). The commission meets once a month and provides some oversight to what’s happening at the Pocatello Airport. It’s one of several volunteer commissions set up by the City of Pocatello to provide citizen oversight to various activities the city engages in. There are six of us on the airport commission. A couple of folks have served for more than five years and a couple of us are brand new to the commission.

Today’s meeting had to do with a few leases of buildings and property out at the airport. Usually these are no-brainer kinds of issues. Today’s items, however, had a lot of discussion and comment. None of it was heated or controversial, just working through the best wording to use to accomplish what the Airport Director wants to have happen and fit within the long-range planning for the airport. Some very good things are starting to happen out there. More later when things become more settled.

An Empty Calendar … and a Picture for June 7, 2010

Flowers Along the Wayside
Flowers Along the Wayside

Today’s calendar was completely empty. That doesn’t happen very often. The rest of the week looks like it’ll make up for an empty calendar, though. Meanwhile I spent most of the day working on an email issue on a website I’m modifying under contract.

The iPhone application I’ve been using, called Project 365, actually seems rather pointless other than being a method of posting pictures on Facebook. I think it’s time to look for something better. It’s storing a copy of each of these pictures on the iPhone and there’s now method to delete them or do anything else with them. That did propel me, however, to start putting the pictures along with something about the day on my blog. If I find a better program, then I’ll switch. Perhaps I need to write the better program??

Long Church Day … and a Picture for June 6, 2010

Pocatello Stake Center
Pocatello Stake Center

I’ve written several times before about my current Church assignment on the Pocatello Stake High Council (the first blog entry is here). As a result of that assignment I sometimes have meetings all day long and into the evening. There are other Church callings that are much busier than that, but this one is sufficient for me!

The picture was taken as I arrived at the Pocatello Stake Center for my last meeting of the day. We’re planning an Emergency Preparedness Fair to be held on the 9th of October and this meeting was part of that planning process.
