This was the line at the Apple Store at the Gateway Mall in Salt Lake City on Friday, July 18th, a week after the new Apple iPhone was released. People were still lining up to buy an iPhone and the store was selling out of stock every day around noon. I was in the store for an adaptor for my Macbook and asked the clerk if they had any iPhones left. She pointed to a group of five people lined up on the far wall inside the store and told me that they had five phones left; enough for that group. The folks in line outside the store were definitely out of luck. A few minutes later, the store manager went out to tell them and they all left, probably to return the next day.
