The local Headstart program is located in this school, along with several other agencies involved in working with and supporting the children in the community. I had the chance to meet with a group of four year olds and read them a story. Many of the kids were at first restless because they had to give up whatever they were doing to come and sit down in front of me. However, by the time I got to the third page of the illustrated story (The Rain Came Down), they were all engaged. Clearly they really enjoyed being read a story. The book I read (about 15 pages in length with one or two sentences under each picture) will be given to the kids tomorrow (they’ll each get a copy of the book) to take home and be their very own book. I’m looking forward to doing this again.
