The first license available to people interested in amateur radio is a “Technician” license. That license allows some capability on most of the amateur radio frequency bands with the most capability licensed is on the very high frequency and higher bands.
The 2-meter radio band (144-147 mhz) is very popular with Technician class hams. A number of 2 meter networks meet on the air during the week on this radio band. I join three of them, two on Sunday evenings. The first meets at 8:00 p.m. and the second one calls the roll at about 8:30 p.m. My handy little 2-meter radio serves well for these meetings.
