This picture was taken from the marble courtyard that surrounds the monument itself. It looks from the monument back along the fountains to the main gate.
The fountains today are powered by electrical pumps. In the 1600’s, that wasn’t an option. Instead, to the left and to the right (at the end of the brick walkways going to the left and the right) were tall buildings with cisterns at the top. These were filled with water from the Yamuna River, which in turn provided the water pressure necessary to run the fountains.
